SIDDAL SPEEDSTER COBY NICHOL OVER THE MOON WITH ENGLAND U16 SELECTION
“Mon dieu il est rapide!”… A french phrase Coby may need to become accustomed to which translates to “My God he’s fast!”.
Coby Nichol, 16, is one of 22 talented young players who have been included in England U16’s squad to play the French in a 2-game test series later this month.
Coby Nichol is a player who has always impressed me with his blistering pace and skill. The Leeds Rhinos U16 Scholar was included in our top 40 players for the 2018 season. You can watch Coby in action on GRM SPORT playing for Amateur team Siddal by following the link at the end of this article.
Here’s what Coby had to say to GRM SPORT
On his rugby career so far
“My Rugby hero is Greg Inglis, and I started playing rugby for Illingsworth. There wasn’t really much structure, we just played for fun. I moved to Siddal when I was in year 8 or year 9. I am currently still on a Leeds Rhinos Scholarship and will find out in a few weeks if I will be offered an Under-18s deal going forward.
On his achievements at Siddal
“ We reached 3 cup finals in one year, but unfortunately didn’t win any of them! This was a huge blow, but above all it was a learning experience for the team. Since then we have had a lot of changes on and off the field which has made us stronger as a group.
The England National Team selection process
“ The training day with England Rugby League was mainly focusing on core skills. They were testing to see who was the loudest and the most confident.
“ I think I was selected to represent England for this upcoming test series because I know I am a confident person. I always try to be the loudest, the quickest and the sharpest. I have little competitions in my head, always pushing myself, even during training.
On his reaction to being selected.
" I was very shocked! A lot of my friends recieved letters saying they had been picked and I was still waiting for mine. I then started to hear news about people who wasn’t picked so I started to worry. I finally received the good news after congratulating other people all day! When I got the news I ran around the full house!
On his rugby influence
“ The most influencial person in my career so far has been Mark Johnson. Mark was my previous coach at Siddal. He helped me develop as a person more than anything. Mark would stand by you 100% to help you achieve whatever you set your mind to.
How much are you looking forward to the test series?
“ I can’t wait, I am a bit nervous, but am also excited to meet everyone and build as a squad.
Thank you for taking the time to speak to GRM SPORT Coby, wishing you all the best with your international experience!
