LUIS JOHNSON: I WANT TO PROVE I CAN PLAY AT THE TOP LEVEL
In case you haven’t realised, there is a dog-fight happening a the bottom end of the table and Tony Smith’s Hull Kingston Rovers are well in the thick of it. Hull KR are currently languishing in 11th (second from bottom) but recent performances against Leeds Rhinos and bitter rivals Hull FC have proven the battle to remain in Super League is all but over.
Luis Johnson, on loan from Warrington Wolves, has been one of many star men for Rovers in recent weeks, putting in big shifts and terrorising defenders. Despite only being the tender age of 20, you’ll often find Johnson lingering around the shoulders of Danny McGuire waiting for a tip-on which leads to a marauding 20-30 yard break, similar to the one against Leeds just last week.
I, like many others have been very impressed with the youngster and was keen to find out a little bit more! Here’s what Luis Johnson had to say to GRM SPORT:
Tell us a bit more about your rugby background
“My rugby hero growing up was Greg Inglis. I payed amateur rugby at Oulton Raiders (Leeds) having joined when I was 3 or 4 years old. I went on to sign for Castleford Tigers when I was 16 and before moving to Warrington Wolves.
How have you found your time on loan at Hull KR so far?
“ I was on loan at Rochdale before coming to KR, so it is great to get regular game time playing in the Super League. The loan spell was originally supposed to be one month, but I am staying on a week-by-week basis now
You seem to be gelling really well with your Hull KR teammates, who would you say you have formed the biggest bond with during your loan spell?
“ I have formed a bond with a lot of the lads, especially the travelling players. A few of us travel over from Leeds and Castleford and I have gotten to know them really well. People like Mitch Garbutt, Danny McGuire, and Robbie Mulhern. It’s also great having Harvey (Livett) over from Warrington too, I have really settled in.
What is you relationship like with Tony Smith?
“ Good, he has shown faith in me and has given me game time, he saw some clips of me playing and saw potential in me doing a good job over here.
You seem to be playing out of your skin at the moment, with really impressive performances, what do you think is spurring you on the most?
“ I am trying to prove to Tony and Hull KR I have what it take to play at the top level and play in the Super League week in week out, I am also trying to prove to Warrington I can play at this level too.
