WEST HULL ACADEMY CAPTAIN DESCRIBES NATIONAL CUP SUCCESS.
On Saturday 30th March, a young West Hull Academy team turned up to Upton with the aim of producing a successful victory in the BARLA National Cup Semi Final despite being written off.
The academy team did this successfully by winning 22-4 away from home. The young West Hull team featured 14 players from the West Hull U18's team meanwhile the oldest player was aged at 22 in the side. Calvin Parker was captain of the young team who achieved victory against a very strong physical Upton.
Calvin Parker recently caught up with GRM SPORT to describe the team's victory.
How did you plan to approach the semi final with such a young squad?
“ The message of the game was to just to turn up with right attitude and go and play how we do. There a talented bunch of lads and really tough, so we knew if we did that we would have a good chance of winning.
When was you named captain of West Hull Academy?
“ I've been captain since the first game of pre-season after coming back after one year out for the Academy. It's a good feeling cause shows what Mark Cassidy and Matt Wilson who are the coaches, think of you. It's an honour.
“Prior to this season, I was only named captain on the odd occasion when I was younger. I'm not as vocal as I should be really. It is a great honour to be honest, to go there and beat Upton at their place after they thought we had sent our U16's… Just made it more sweeter. Hope I get to lead them out and we win and be nice to lift a national cup. Not many get the honour of doing that.
During the game, how did the team grow in confidence to battle with the age difference and build momentum?
”We knew they would be physical but we matched them and went on to be dominant. The lads are tough as nails for their ages and it's a credit to them. They don't back down. We knew if we matched there toughness we would have the fitness and skill to eventually make them crumble and it did.
After the game, what was the atmosphere in the dressing room like?”
Absolutely bouncing as you can imagine. Everyone was proud of each other and there efforts.
Finally, how do you take confidence and approach the BARLA National Cup final?
“ By having that same attitude we had there and getting in training and improving. Thatto will be a very good side. So have to approach it with right attitude and toughness and hopefully result will go our way if we do that.
