GRM SPORT Player Of The Year, Lewis Poskitt previews the first game of the season.
Having featured over two thousand athletes on our platform, at the end of the 2018 campaign we shortlisted the top 40 rugby players to feature on GRM SPORT. The shortlist was split into 4 categories and Lewis Poskitt of Beverley ARLFC was selected as the best Open Age player having scored almost 30 tries of his own and assisting well over 50. Lewis led his team to an unbeaten first season in the NCL in fine fashion.
You can watch Beverley in action as well as the top 40 shortlist on our YouTube channel at the end of this article. GRM SPORT will also be covering Hull Dockers v Beverley which you can watch on our Youtube Channel from Sunday 2nd March.
Beverley have since been promoted to NCL Division 2 and will start the 2019 campaign against local rivals Hull Dockers.
I recently caught up with Lewis to discuss his thoughts on promotion and the upcoming opening fixture. Here’s what Lewis Poskitt had to say to GRM SPORT
On being named GRM SPORT player of the year last season
“ It was a huge honour to be named the first ever GRM SPORT player of the season, the platform has come a long way and I am looking forward to Season 3.
On pre-season preparations
“ We now have a solid academy team and had 36 players down at training. This is great for the club and great for the first team because we have a full-team to practice against rather than unopposed drills. The message from Scott Taylor has been more or less the same, we went well last year and we’re not looking to change anything, we’ve added a few bits and made a few tweaks but it’s more or less the same set up. Tony Spence has joined the coaching team during the off-season, he has loads of experience and has been pulling individuals to a side in training giving us valuable advice on how we can improve.
On the current squad
“ The core of the team has also stayed the same, We’ve got Billy Riby at Full-back, Lewis Straw who was also named in GRM SPORT’s top ten last year, Jack and Bobby Howdle who will play dual-reg at Hull FC reserves. We’ll also be welcoming Jordan Precious into the squad this year from Myton Warriors, Jordan can play in the halves or at 13.
On the first game of the season this weekend v Hull Dockers
“ We played them a few years ago in pre-season and they just got the win, we have come on massively since then. This will be one of the biggest games of the year, it may not go exactly how we want it, but it’s the first game of the season and a very important building block.
On finishing unbeaten last season
“There’s no pressure to try and finish unbeaten again this season. Last season we said we’ll be happy with finishing the season in the play-offs and we ended up unbeaten! Like I said, there’s no pressure but we will have targets on our heads!
Hunslet Club Parkside started on a similar journey to you guys, coming out of nowhere to win unbeaten promotion after promotion, are you guys looking to follow their footsteps?
“Yes, the aim is to get to the Premiere Division similar to Hunslet. I don’t think we can go back to back promotions, season after season, but we will give it our best shot. We are still building off a group of young lads. Hunslet Club Parkside are a group of very good players who were at the right age with the right experience. We’re a young side, but we have lots of talent so lets so how we go!
