George Clarke: IT'S ALL FUN AND GAMES!
If you've watched the "Legendary Video" I produced you'll know George Clarke! Yes, he is the Hunslet Club Parkside Loose-Forward shouting "Youtube yeah! Youtube yeah!" into the camera!
It's fair to say George was very excited, smiling from ear to ear! And he had every right to be. That particular clip was filmed on a very muddy pitch in Halifax and the new boys; Hunslet Club Parkside, had just beaten NCL powerhouses Siddal 42 - 6 in the first game of the season.
I have covered Hunslet Club Parkside on multiple occasions and you can watch their highlights by following the link at the end of this article.
Prior to this game, Siddal were the most feared team in the league, but there was a new pack in town and boy did they set the standard. Led by the man-mountain prop; Jamie Fields, Hunslet Club Parkside remain unbeaten league champions, with a few games still left to play.
I recently caught up with 25 year-old George Clarke, to discuss his Grassroots Story and his thoughts on this season. Here's what he had to say:
1. Talk us through your Grassroots development & personal achievements from a junior to where you are now.
" As a junior, East Leeds was my youth team before signing for Leeds Rhinos at 16. Following that, I decided to head for Australia to play for a country team Casino Cougars. I played a season out there and came back to sign for Hunslet Hawks and Gateshead. I later joined the Army. Having some time out I kept an eye on Hunslet Parkside and thought that's where I wanna play my rugby!
Some of my personal achievements include going to the Armed Forces World Cup in Sydney last year with the UKAF Squad. Pulling on the shirt against the Aussies was a big highlight for me, all I could think about is Jamie Peacock chinning mason!
Captaining the Army team this year was a massive honour and also Winning the treble last year, we bagged the national cup, conference trophy and league! Lastly, never losing a game for Hunslet Parkside, I think I've set the record!
2. Why do you think Hunslet Club Parkside have been so successful this season?
" The togetherness of the club. Everyone's tight with each other and it shows. If you're slacking some one will pick up on it! Everyone is after the same goal, we're all on the same page. And the pack! Everyone of us is 6ft plus, big strong lads and we try chuck the ball around too! There isn't a team which has been able to handle it this year!"
3. What has been your toughest game so far this season?
" West Hull is always a tough game, They're pretty boring but always stay in there and don't fall off. The scoreline has being pretty close the last two times we've met with West Hull. Teams just want to play rugby in this division whilst in NCL Division one the teams are a lot more physical. It's worked in our favour this year as we're playing tough rugby but the skill set has also been top notch as well. "
4. What has been the best moment of the season?
" The bell of the year award must go to Ryan Gaunt! When we were down by two points attacking West Hull's try line in a hard game, Guanty thinks it's fine to put a drop goal over and fist punches the air and starts jogging back buzzing and every ones looking about saying what the f**K! It's a good job we scored the next set, but Jesus that had us in stitches after! Your grassroots video intro had a few people messaging me laughing as well but it's all fun and games!"
