Tiaki Chan: From Sydney to the South of France!
Despite a sketchy start to the season with a 42-16 loss away to Widnes, Catalans Dragans U19s have also enjoyed some fantastic results against tough opposition. Some of their notable results include a 31-30 win over Castleford and a 34-32 win over City of Hull Academy. The City of Hull v Catalans Dragans fixture was covered by GRM and you can watch this thrilling episode at the end of this article!
The Dragons still have a long way to go, but are showing promise in several key positions. One of their standout players who is certainly one to watch for the future is 17 year old forward Tiaki Chan, from Sydney Australia. Despite being one of the youngest players at the Academy I was really impressed by Chan's aggressive running which put Hull on the back-foot a number of times and set up the platform for try-scoring opportunities.
I recently caught up with Tiaki, and here's what he had to say to GRM:
1. Where did you play as a junior?
" I played my junior rugby in Sydney, Australia for the Wentworthville Magpies in the Parramatta district".
2. Who was your rugby hero growing up?
" My rugby hero growing up was and is still my dad Alex Chan. Former NRL and Super League player"
3. What led to you signing with the Dragons?
" In the beginning Of 2017 I moved to Perpignan with my family. I registered with the local league team of St Esteve and was offered an opportunity to train with the Acedemy squad throughout the year. Then the start of 2018 I got called up by coach Thierry Dumain and Bruno Vergess to be apart of the Academy for this year.
4. What has been your best experience playing for the Dragons?
" The best experience I have have whilst I have been a part of this team is playing on the Stade Gillbert Brutus and going to England to play as well!"
5. As an academy you’ve pulled off some great wins against tough opponents- talk us through some of the key wins this season.
" One of our biggest wins this season has to be against City of Hull at Bishop Burton in Hull. We won by just 2 points right on full time. This was a huge win for us as the first game we played against Hull in Perpignan was tough and we lost 70-16, however the second time we played them we got the win! The 34-32 victory was massive for us as Hull are a very strong side"
6. What’s your number 1 pre-match song?
" My number 1 pre-match song has to be look alive by Drake!"
7. What do you like to get up to outside of rugby?
"I like spending time with friends, watching other rugby games and playing Fortnite"
