Olly Russell: The Team Have My Back
Just under a week ago Huddersfield fans were on cloud nine having witnessed the Giants emerge victorious following a great battle against rivals Leeds Rhinos at Headingley. One of the stars of the game was Olly Russell, 19, who played a commanding role in the win. Russel who was called up to fill in for injured Danny Brough did not look out of place, kicking 4 goals and slotting over a cool drop goal to keep the Giants out of reach.
I recently caught up with Russell and here's what he told GRM:
1. Where did you play your amateur rugby?
"I am from Oldham and I played for Oldham St Annes".
2. With this being just your second first team appearance, did you think you'd be kicking 9 points to secure the win?
"I am really happy with the way I contributed to the win and I was really excited to play! Before the game some of the senior players said they wanted me to lead them around the park and they backed both me and my calls"
3. Who was your favourite Super League player growing up?
" My favourite player growing up was Kevin Sinfield, he's an Oldham lad like me and looked calm in high pressure situations"
4. Having co-captained the U19s who else would you say is a future super league star at the academy to look out for?
" Another future star Innes Senior real athlete knows how to finish a try and also Jack Flynn who is a very hard working clever hooker!"
