Ryan Steen: We have the ability to compete with all teams!
If there was ever an award for the nicest 'tough-guys' in Rugby League, Ryan Steen would be up there in the top 5. Steen, 28, has a no nonsense playing style and is well known in the NCL for his defensive effort and unforgiving tackling technique, with most of his big hits featuring in several GRM highlight videos last year. Off-the-pitch Ryan is a top bloke and a true asset to his club.
Currently captaining NCL powerhouse, West Hull, Ryan Steen has also played at academy level for Hull FC and Doncaster as well as playing for East Hull. West Hull seem to have a steady ship in the top flight of amateur rugby despite the emergence of Hunslet Club Parkside and the demise of other clubs across Hull. I recently interviewed the Loose-Foward to discuss a host of topics and here's what he had to say to GRM:

1. Having played in the NCL Premier for a number of years, who would you say is the toughest team you’ve played against?
" There have been a few tough away trips but Siddal away is the toughest team, and our closest rivals with regards to competing for the top spot over the years."
2. Who is the best player you’ve played with or against?
" I've played with too many good players so I’m really struggling for one! Possibly Danny Houghton (current Hull FC hooker). I've also played against Sam Burgess (South Sydney Prop), Sam Tomkins (Wigan full-back / stand-off) etc to name a few top players."

Steen cites Sam Burgess as one of the best players he has played against.
3. What has been your greatest achievement in Rugby?
"Winning Academy Grand Final at Hull FC and also winning all 4 trophies with West’s in 2014!
4. How would you describe the current standard in the NCL?
"I think the level is still decent despite what a few people may think! I personally still believe it is a good standard. However a few ex players I know believe the standards have dropped over the years, but as a current player I disagree. I do agree with the fact a lot of teams struggle to get their best teams out on a regular basis, and this is usually due to holidays and festivals etc"

5. If you could choose 3 current super league players to sign for West Hull, who would you choose?
"I would choose; Ben barba, Adam Cuthbertson and Mark Percival!"
6. West Hull are known for being one of the strongest clubs in the country, how has the 2018 season gone so far?
"I think we've had a decent start! We had one poor performance against Wigan St Pats and although we lost to Hunslet, We were very unfortunate not to win! As a club we’re going in the right direction and hope that continues. Plus we're playing in the National Cup Final this week!
7. Where do you predict West Hull will finish this season?
" As a group, we all believe we can finish as high as we want! We have the ability to compete with all teams! Just finding consistency is key for us this season!
