John Mooney: Brownies Bulldogs v Hull Dockers
Bulldogs crush Dockers to reach final
Brownies Bulldogs will play East Hull in the Final of the BOCM Cup at West Hull Community Centre on Boxing Day morning after a comprehensive victory over Hull Dockers at Beecroft Street on Saturday.
Brilliantly led by half-back Lennox Green, the Bulldogs looked fit and sharp despite having had just three training sessions in preparation for the game and had the game sewn up in the first quarter. Strong-running centre Kirk Ledger, who was a thorn in Dockers' side throughout, followed a kick through and hacked on for the opening score after six minutes, converted by Green, then backed up a flowing move to add another try a couple of minutes later. Full-back Tom Burke then got in on the act with a hat-trick in quick succession, the first following a lovely kick from Green, who couldn't add any of the extras in a gale-force wind nor from Johnny Buttery's try in the corner. At 28-0 the Dockers were reeling but managed to get on the score-sheet on the stroke of half-time when Darren Brumby crashed over under the posts for Josh Farr to convert.
Dockers pulled themselves together after the break and started to play some decent football. James Grainger crossed to make it 28-10 but any thoughts of a revival were soon crushed by Ledger and Buttery, who added further tries. Dockers best forward David Bade went over for a converted try but two further scores, one a long-range interception by Ledger as the weather closed in and light faded, gave the Bulldogs an emphatic 50-16 victory.
While East Hull will provide a sterner test, the Bulldogs have some very smart players, especially Green, who will be expecting to line-up for the Royal Navy against West Hull in the first round of the Challenge Cup next month.
