John Mooney: East Hull v Lambwath
East Hull progressed to the Final of the BOCM Cup after a hard-fought though eventually convincing victory over Lambwath Lions at Rosmead Street. The winners will take on either Brownies Bulldogs or Hull Dockers, who meet in the second semi-final at Beecroft Street on Saturday.
The home side were very quickly out of the traps, scoring on the right edge after the Lions blew the kick-off. The Lions had hardly been in the game before a converted try took them into the lead which they held for 20 minutes before two quick unconverted tries just before half-time regained the advantage for East Hull.
At just 12-6 down, Lambwath came out strongly for the second stanza and centre Tom Mitchell scored a brilliant try after a flowing movement almost from their own line. With the scores level it was game on but after just five minutes Jack Walker crashed over for East Hull and their mobile forwards began dominating. Three further tries in the last quarter, played in virtual darkness, gave the 34-12 score a lop-sided look as the Lions had given as much as they had got for most of the game but whoever faces the winners in the Final at West Hull Community Centre on Boxing Day morning will know they have been in a game.
Alan Parker and his committee have worked hard to get four teams into the competition and there is further good news for grassroots supporters as eight teams have expressed an interest in joining the Hull and District Open Age Summer League.
