The Parker Cup: Hullensians vs Hessle
Written by Adi Skinner (Hullensians Legends captain)
Hullensians travelled to a spirited Hessle looking to bring the Parker cup back to the lane.
The game was as expected between the two teams with both Brandon Sargeson and Ash Hedges causing the referee to reach into his pocket in a game that saw 4 yellows and one red card between the teams.
Ensians started the strongest and could have been in front after two minutes when a neat pass from Mike Woodrow put Shawn Boatin through a gap to race 50 meters only to be held up by an outrageous tackle by the Hessle full back over the line in a 1 on 1 tackle.
After 20 minutes of scrums and penalties Ensians decided to take the 3, calmly slotted over by Steve Ashton from in front of the sticks to put Ensians in front. This lead lasted 5 minutes as Ill discipline resulted in Hessle levelling in the same manner.
As the game approached half time, Adi Skinner continued his red hot try scoring form by crashing through the Hessle defence, somehow managing to get the ball down while taking 5 Hessle defenders 10 yards with him for the ride, when Woodrow really should have been in support to make it easier. Conversion missed.
2nd half was the same with Ensians and Hessle nudging over a penalty to make it 11-6. Ensians could have made the game safe with 5 minutes to go but steve Ashton hit the corner flag with his penalty from in front of the sticks.
This caused a Hessle rally and they went over in the corner with two mins to go and tie the scores with the conversion hitting the bar.
From the kick off Ensians turned the ball over and with the last play, New boy James Llewelyn managed to wrestle over the line, which Ashton converted to ensure the trophy was presented to stand in skipper Charlie Paterson only before Hessle took it back off Ensians as “they had paid for it, so it’s staying at Hessle”
Great effort from 1-15 with special mention to man of the match Matt Kluwe and Gareth Fox for his propping debut.
