John Mooney: Weekend Round Up
North Hull Knights failed in their bid to reach the Bartletts Yorkshire Cup Final for the second time in three years, going down 34-14 at a snowy Ovenden. The game had been in doubt throughout the day but dozens of volunteers helped clear the snow from the pitch and though conditions were very testing the game went ahead and the Halifax-based side overcame the conditions to run out worthy winners. They will face either East Leeds or Lock Lane in the Final on January 28 at Featherstone.
I was at Beecroft Street to see Three Tuns got back to winning ways in the Hull And District Open Age League after three successive defeats. A scoreline of 60-20 over Bransholme suggests it was a walkover but it was only in the last quarter when the home side let loose, mainly due to the visitors lacking numbers. Tuns were leading 10-0 before Bransholme had touched the ball but a well-worked try saw the deficit reduced to 10-6. A further bout of scoring saw Tuns go 18-6 clear but again the visitors fought back with an interception try. Ben Rowan didn't have his goal-kicking boots on and at one stage in the second period Bransholme were only eight points adrift thanks to a bizarre episode when they scored after the ball had hit an upright and bounced back in-goal. However, that was as good as it got for Craig Cook's men as they wilted under severe pressure in the closing stages. Congratulations to all who played in freezing conditions and to referee Wilson. Scorers for Three Tuns: Nev Morrison (3), Nat Parkinson (2), Tony Eccles, Kris Stocks, Gaz Bennet, Paul Shaw, Ben Rowan, Nathan Powley and Liam Crooks with a jinking, side-stepping run worthy of a half-back. Carl Pettman took over kicking duties and converted six. For Bransholme Pete Holmes, Chris Moore, Anthony Rhodes and Dale Butler touched down with Josh McDonald converting two.
Hull Wyke had few problems seeing off Reckitts 40-6 at Cropton Road with Ryan Johnson contributing 16 points while the match between Bilton Sullys and Brownies Bulldogs was postponed.
